80x80cm Straw marquetry on medium panel

Inspired by Donald Judd’s work.
In order to cross the datas, the folded surface gives here a confrontation between 2D and 3D.
The piece is extracting itself from the support, moves towards the viewer to place you in the center of the sun, classical pattern of straw rhye marquetry.
A minimal shape, a surface turning into a volume, a classic pattern for a contemporary message
An austere narration with a baroque vocabulary

The marked page.
The brief moment, taken on the spot with a time stretching craft technique

«Mono no Aware», or the impermanence of beauty.
Temporally cristallizing a technique, an aesthetic, a speech.
The Fan pattern, king of straw marqsuetry, Jean Michel Frank’s signature, applied to a minimal figure, à la Donal Judd.

The temple.
We are recreating here a volume using the simplest vocabulary possible :
three plans, put together to make a contemplative space, timeless

The meditative effect is reinforced by the convergent pattern of the sun,
starting in the junction of the x, the y, and the z

Inside and outside are recovered with utlra black straw, reminding us of Soulages, Kapoor, Roni Horn, etc...

the geometrical narrative structure from Robert Mangold, with an additional dimension.
The 2D drawing becomes volume thanks to the orientations of the straws, clashing one another.
the Mangold line, with the help of the straw marquetry, turns into layers, levels, and depth.

20 x 20 cm Straw marquetry on medium panel

Appropriation / interpretation.
this 20 cm square tile, with a cut angle, echoes the minimal and constructivist movements of my imaginary museum.
The simplicity of the form,
combined to the straw marquetry,
creates a luminous contradictory effect.
the surface is alive.
The tile can exist on its own, but its modularity allows infinite narrative compositions.
Those elements can in fact become the brush of the owner.

The start of the curve.
Curves to confirm angles

This is the beginning of a reflection process about the Art nouveau, where curves were used as definitions, accents or even an ellipsis sometimes.

The transformation of the light, through the straw, gets a new meaning when the surface becomes a curve.
